Teaching and training

Training the next generation of scientists and industry leaders is one of our central commitments. Through coursework and research mentorship, we work with students to build the technical depth, scientific judgment, and communication skills needed to address open problems in biomedicine and translate them into real-world impact.

🧭 Mentoring philosophy

A mutual fit between the advisor and the trainee is important. Please see Yosuke's blog post on his mentoring philosophy.

Coursework at UCLA

Coursework at UCLA

Yosuke teaches machine learning and biostatistics classes at UCLA. The primary goal is to cultivate the ability to apply statistical concepts and computational techniques to real-world applications. In the class, we draw examples from statistical genetics, computational genomics, and biomedical data science. When we teach a concept, the goal is that students will be able to:

  • Explain what each method does
  • Build intuition for why it works
  • Connect concepts to biomedical applications
  • Identify underlying assumptions
  • Critically evaluate results
